There’s something you need to understand about when we were growing up in Vancouver in the ‘90s. There were simply LESS THINGS IN THE WORLD. There was no internet, no MP3s, no Amazon delivery, no Amazon Prime, no Amazon Audible…no Amazon at all. All we had were the shirts on our backs and these little rectangles filled with magnetized strips called CASSETTE TAPES. Each tape cost a sizable amount of money. The inventors of Spotify were mere babies suckling on their mother’s teet at the time.

So whatcha did back then was you’d sit by your cassette player listening to the radio, then when they said the name of the upcoming song—if it was a song you wanted on your cassette—you hit record. Then one song at a time, you could slowly create a mixtape, which would often have a radio DJ introducing the song. It was a sloppy, unrefined system, but it was the best system we had. We still have a few of those cassettes today! We don’t have anything to play them on, but we got ‘em.

Nowadays, we go about it VERY differently. The Houseplant team meticulously curates a selection of songs together based on our music taste. Then they send us around a hundred songs and we work our way through them, listening several times over to ensure they're worthy of being forged into vinyl. Once we narrow it down to the number of songs we need for the latest vinyl, we hunker down together and deduce the best order to put the songs in. An album is an emotional journey and needs to be structured in the right way. It’s not a track list you can shuffle around and change. This shit is FOREVER. So we gotta get it right.
