But Why do we love vinyl so much?
To that we can only respond honestly by saying this: that’s a stupid, stupid question. Why do people love sunsets, or hamburgers, or making love and then splitting a delicious hamburger? Because these things are fucking awesome. And just like you can’t improve on a sunset, you can’t improve the vinyl record. It was the pinnacle of human achievement in all audible categories. Before computers and magnetic tape ruined everything, vinyls were the lords of music. The tactile nature of vinyl is just so satisfying. The sleeves covered in art colour are so engaging. And like, a square sleeve holding a circle? That’s two shapes for the price of one! And then once it starts spinning it’s game over.
Instead of the boring click of a mouse,
you got a big black disc of tunes spinning hypnotically as a little needle scratches beautiful music out of the disc and into the world. And that scratchy and raw sound has a fidelity that is beyond compare. Plus the scratchy sound is cool as fuck. Some of our first vinyls were Led Zeppelin, PInk Floyd, Neil Young, Bob Dylan (and a bunch of kids music that isn’t super cool to mention here, so we won’t, but special shout out to Canadian legend Fred Penner for The Cat Came Back!). Our grandparents had gramaphones (google it if you’re like whaaaaaat?), and so we got to mess around with those, record players, cassette tapes, CDs, laser disc (best name ever!), MP3 CDs, and all the way until now where the main way of listening to music is on a streaming music service. Well we proudly boast that the Houseplant vinyls and Houseplant record player have absolutely NO streaming capabilities (though the record player can connect to speakers via bluetooth!). It’s retro, it’s cool, it’s tactile… it’s vinyl!
